Sunday 22nd November 2015 – The Bishop of Edmonton visits Christ Church Southgate

The new Bishop of Edmonton, the Right Reverend Robert Wickham, made his first visit to Southgate on Sunday 22nd November to lead the final service of the church year at Christ Church Southgate, which is celebrating 400 years of continuous worship.

Bishop Rob First Visit Christ The KingBishop Robert congratulated the parish on its programme of anniversary events, which have included sell-out silent film nights featuring live accompaniment by the church organists, jazz evenings, dances, photography and artists’ open days and talks on the history of the church, the parish and its people.

In his sermon, Bishop Robert said: “The story of Southgate is caught up in this hallowed place. For centuries and beyond, the people of Southgate have seen Jesus dancing in this church, dancing in our streets. Jesus has been proclaimed here in the great numbers of baptisms, funerals and weddings in this place.”

After the morning service the Bishop attended a celebration party. The church concluded celebrations of its Patronal Festival with a spectacular concert performed by the choir and a local orchestra.

The church has welcomed over 2,000 visitors to events this year, on top of its regular services and annual May Day Fair and has formed new long-lasting partnerships with other local organisations. A recent project has involved contacting residents living in homes connected to the men listed on the church’s war memorial.

Special services have included an Anniversary Eucharist with the Bishop of London which took place in May. The year has also seen the arrival of new vicar, Fr Crichton Limbert and the licensing of The Reverend Hazel Miall as Associate Priest.

Fr Chrichton Limbert, Vicar of Christ Church Southgate said “Bishop Robert has a positive, inspirational presence and his visit was a wonderful way to energise us as we begin a new church year. From December we are introducing new services which means the church is open for worship six days a week. In addition to our traditional services this Advent we’re holding our first Christingle Service on 6th December and a “Pop Up” nativity on 20th December. All are welcome!”
