PAST CONCERTS
In recent years Christ Church has presented a number of concerts. You may particularly remember Music for a Summer’s Evening, with distinguished artists David Theodore, Elizabeth Partridge and Stephen Wilder, a concert given by Harrow School Chamber Choir, J. S. Bach’s Johannes-Passion performed by the Christ Church Choir, the Inkinen Trio and students from all of London’s conservatoires amongst other concerts.
2009
Sunday 1 February 6.30 p.m. - Candlemas Festival Evensong: A festival evensong to celebrate the last Sunday in Christmastide. The choir will sing Maria wallt zum Heiligtum by Johannes Eccard, 1553-1611; Evening Canticles in D by Sir George Dyson, 1883-1964; and a Southgate premiere of Seek him that maketh the seven stars by Jonathan Dove, b. 1959. Dove says about this gorgeous anthem, a recent commission for the Royal Academy of Arts, that it ‘begins with a musical image of the night sky, a repeated organ motif of twinkling stars that sets the choir wondering who made them. The refrain “Seek him” starts in devotional longing but is eventually released into a joyful dance, finally coming to rest in serenity.’ It will certainly be worth making an effort to come to Evensong for Candlemas! No charge. Drinks and nibbles after the service.
Saturday, 7th February: Choir Quiz Night & Ploughman’s Supper from 7 p.m. in the Walker Hall. Fancy yourself as a bit of an egghead? Craving some good old ploughman's food? Then come along to the Choir Quiz Night and Ploughman's Supper. The quiz will be hosted by our very own quizmaster, Mr Ian Winton! Teams will be of up to six people. Adults: £7.50. Children under 14: £4. Price includes supper and a full evening of 'quiztastic' fun, plus the chance to win a great prize! All proceeds to the choir fund. Tickets available from Choir members or by calling the Parish Office 020 8886 0384.
Saturday 21 February 7.30 p.m. - The Songmen: a group of ne’er-do-wells, or rather ‘six fine English gentlemen’ including Alex Eadon, Christ Church's former music director. Tickets for the concert are £8 (£5 concession) to include drinks and nibbles at the interval. The concert will be in two-halves: the first half of 16th/17th century sacred music (Byrd, Tallis, Purcell), mixed with one or two folk-songs or motets. The second half lighter in style with a mixture of barbershop, easy-listening arrangements, even a few pop songs and ‘novelty’ items. You can check out their website at www.songmen.co.uk which includes extracts from their new CD.
Sunday 1 March 6.30 p.m. - Liszt's Via Crucis: The Christ Church Southgate choir will sing Liszt’s ‘Via crucis’, an extraordinary work based on the ‘Stations of the Cross’ a devotion describing the journey of Christ carrying the Cross. Liszt sets these scenes to music in a deeply personal work for choir and organ that consists of radically expressionistic, intense miniatures. No charge. Drinks and nibbles after the service.
Sunday 22 March 6.30 p.m. - German Vespers and Bach Cantata: In lieu of Evensong, the Christ Church Southgate choir will sing Vespers in the Lutheran tradition of Thomaskirche Leipzig, including Bach’s Cantata 131 ‘Aus der Tiefen’ with Baroque Orchestra. No charge. Drinks and nibbles after the service.
