Saturday 7th March – Pilgrimage to All Saints Edmonton

Pilgrimage-StartToday we retraced the footsteps of our ancestors who worshipped at The Weld Chapel, which was founded in 1615 and stood on the site of Christ Church Southgate until 1861. Our mini pilgrimage was part of our ongoing celebrations marking 400 years of Christian worship in Southgate and Palmers Green.

In 1610 Sir John and Lady Weld came to live at Arnolds (later renamed Arnos Grove). At that time, Southgate (then called South Street) was a small hamlet on the edge of the parish of Edmonton. The centre of religious activity was All Saints in Church Street, Edmonton, which had been founded in Norman times. Every Sunday, or whenever other religious services such as marriages, christenings or funerals were required, villagers were faced with six mile round trip through the woodland between the hamlets of Clappers Green and Winchmore Hill, across to Fords Green and along Church Street to All Saints Edmonton.  Sir John built the Weld Chapel in 1615, but parishioners still worshipped at All Saints on special feast days, including Mothering Sunday, when Christians returned to their mother church.

Pilgrimage Route

Today nearly 40 pilgrims retraced these footsteps. Parishioners from Christ Church were joined by members of the congregation of St Andrew’s Southgate (our own daughter church). We began with a short service at 3pm in our Garden of Remembrance which marks the outline of the Weld Chapel, before setting off for Edmonton, with a brief stop at La Rocca Café on Green Lanes for ice cream and coffee before arriving at All Saints at 5.15pm to conclude our Eucharist.

Thank you to all those who joined us today. A special thank you to Rachael Macdonald for helping us plan the route, to Fr Stuart Owen and the congregation of All Saints Edmonton for such a warm welcome and wonderful Pilgrim’s Party, to Richard Hilditch and Philip Miall for carrying the St Andrew’s and Christ Church Banners for the duration of the three mile walk, to PC Steve Savell of Enfield Police for ensuring we walked safely, to Fr Edd Turner for playing the organ and to Reverend Hazel Miall for celebrating the Eucharist at All Saints.
