Sunday 24th May 2015 – 400th Anniversary Service with The Bishop of London

400th Anniversary SermonOn Sunday 24th May we celebrated 400 years of continuous Christian worship on the site of Christ Church. The Bishop of London joined us to celebrate and preach to a packed church which included special dignitaries including Ann Cable DL, Cllr Bernadette Lappage – Deputy Mayor of Enfield and our Vicar Designate, Fr Chrichton Limbert. The Reverend Hazel Miall acted as Deacon and Malcolm D’Aubney acted as Chaplain to the Bishop. The choir performed Mozart’s Coronation Mass.

In his sermon the Bishop asked us to develop new ways of “fanning the rumour of God” over the next hundred years and reminding us that if we “live and grow as a community in whom the Holy Spirit dwells, then indeed we will be a transforming blessing to Southgate and beyond.”

400th Anniversary Bishop PresidingThe service provided the opportunity to look back and celebrate our past and look to the future. Raymond Harris was presented with the St Mellitus Medal – the highest honour that can be awarded to a lay person in the Diocese of London.

After the service, Bishop Richard and our other special guests processed to the Minchenden Oak Garden, which was blessed and re-dedicated as a Garden of Remembrance. The Deputy Lieutenant and Deputy Mayor planted a new oak sapling and the Bishop joined members of the 6th Southgate Cub Scouts to scatter wildflower seeds in the garden.

400th Anniversary Seed PlantingBishop Richard came back to the Parish Centre and launched our Stewardship Appeal before cutting into two fantastic cakes with Fr Chrichton, who will be installed as Vicar of Christ Church in September.

Thank you to the 150 people who came, brought and shared at our Parish Party and to the tribe of helpers who helped to make the day such a memorable occassion.

Lots more photographs, by James Burns, are on the church facebook page!
