Wednesday 22nd April – Churches Together Election Hustings for Enfield Southgate

HustingsIn the parish office hangs a memorial from the time of the Weld Chapel, commemorating William Cunliffe Shaw, who lived in Southgate House (which became Minchenden School). Shaw served as MP for Preston between 1792 and 1796. He was elected unopposed by the 12th Earl of Derby and in 1796 resigned in favour of Derby’s own son, having never spoken in the House!

After our hustings on Wednesday 22nd April, we are certain that whoever is returned as MP for Enfield Southgate on 7th May will have more to say than Shaw when they arrive in parliament!

Hosted on behalf of Churches Together in Southgate, Oakwood and Cockfosters and Chaired by The Reverend Hazel Miall, all five candidates were in attendance and began by giving a four minute speech on why they were the best candidate. They then had one minute to answer a range of interesting questions from the floor, which had been submitted in advance and selected by John Rawding, Chairman of Churches Together. These included Linda McGowan’s question “What would your party do about the desperate situation for migrants, particularly the hundreds drowned in unseaworthy ships?” Peter Fennell asked “Should we vote on the character & intergrity of the candidate or the policy of the party?

Many of those attending had not been inside the church before. We received several positive tweets during the event! A special thank you to Hazel for chairing the hustings, to the Marriott family for helping to collect questions and hand out May Fair raffle tickets afterwards and to David Hinitt for spending a huge amount of time preparing the microphones and helping to put up the stage for the evening
